Who is Jocko? Here’s his bio: Jocko Willink is a decorated retired Navy SEAL officer, author of the New York Times bestselling book, Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win, and co-founder of Echelon Front, where he is a leadership instructor, speaker and executive coach. He is also a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, white tea aficiionado and easily one of the most bad-ass people you’ll ever hear about.
These Are My Four Favorite Things:
WHEN HE GETS GOING HE SOUNDS LIKE RANDY “MACHO MAN” SAVAGE
Oooohhhhh yeahhhh!!! When Jocko talks about “getting after it” or jiu jitsu training his already deep voice drops a few octaves and it sounds like gravel fills his throat to force the air out into the world in a vintage “Macho Man”-esque tone. He’s also a master of pausing in the middle of a phrase for impact, almost like he’s loading up to give you the full Macho before the main point. Always puts a smile on my face, brother.
LIVE BOOK READS
Jocko is extremely well-read and often centers podcasts around books on war, leadership, character and strategy. He usually summarizes a book and then reads large portions of it, pointing out what he thought was interesting. As an author, of course, I want people to read my whole book, but I can’t argue with how effective Jocko is telling someone else’s story in a mix of his own words and live reading.
CONSTANT HARD SELLING OF JIU JITSU
I have wanted to take up boxing, but Jocko’s constant hammering home the physical and mental benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has me thinking about taking up that sport instead. His talk of rolling, different belts, the names of jiu jitsu holds like the Rear Naked Choke, The Traingle Choke and all kinds of other moves has me wanting to know how to do all of it and become more of a tough guy than I already am. Word.
THE MAN, THE MYTH: ECHO CHARLES
Echo is Jocko’s co-host, buddy, comedy foil, fellow BJJ evangelist and the show’s own Bodhi. He’s from Hawaii, he’s jacked, he played football at University of Hawaii, he was a bouncer…but he’s also a regular dude in Jocko’s orbit and acts as the fan’s voice within the show, asking questions we’d ask if we were in the room. His Instagram is a good time, bruh.
