As we head into the full launch of my Randy Savage biography, I wanted to share a cool moment I had as a kid, hanging with Big John Studd as an 8-year-old Macho Man fan:
It’s 1986. I’m in third grade. I am obsessed with pro wrestling.
I love Macho Man, Hulk and Big John Studd so much I called myself Little John Studd…
My dad works for Toys R Us and amazingly they bring in Big John Studd as the star for the grand opening of a new store.
Me and my brother pack up ALL of our wrestling action figures to meet him.
After the big opening and signing and meet & greet, we’re in for a massive treat:
We get to have lunch with Big John in a back room.
Like, just me and my brother and parents and 6’10”, 360 pound Big John Studd!
I don’t remember what I ate. I think Studd ate an 8-egg omelette and a full loaf of french toast.
As we’re eating, we lay out our WWF collection and I put my guy Macho Man right in the center, between Hulk Hogan and King Kong Bundy.
Of course, Studd played along and used his action figure to pin all the other guys. He was awesome. It was an amazing day I’ll never forget… Even almost 40 years later…
My mom found this picture recently and shared it with me…
So when I say I’ve wanted to write a Macho Man biography for as long as I can remember, this is about as far back as my mind goes.
